As every story, the “tale of RDC” can be told in many different ways depending on the storyteller. This post tells my own story, the way I experienced it; the way I found the people I currently call partners (also friends); the way I lived the birth of RDC.
Everything began in 2010. I was looking for a topic for the final project degree when I found Professor Pedro Serna from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). He was leading a new and promising research line on UHPC. After a short talk to him, I really liked its proposal and I decided to join him. It was then when I first met Esteban Camacho, a PhD student. I did not know back then, but it was the beginning of a great adventure that has lasted until today.
While Esteban specialised in advanced concrete mixture design, specially in the design of UHPC dosages, I focused on the design of structures using special concretes including fibres. The work in these two areas make one thing possible for us:
The optimum concrete mixture for an optimum structural design
That was the principle we followed to win in 2011 the first prize of the “Technology innovation in Civil Engineering and Architecture” and also the first prize of the “Concrete Expressiveness” contest from Spanish Association of Structural Concrete (ACHE). In the following movie you can see us!
It did not take long until UHPC began to catch the eye of engineers and precasters. I remember the day Hugo Coll (consulting civil engineer at ICOSA Civil Engineering and associate professor at UPV back then) showed up to our office’s door and said to both of us: “We need to design a UHPC pedestrian bridge. It is possible I can manage to make it real.” That was how we met him. Even though we were disbelieving at first we started working on it, and in few weeks we presented a first design draft; within a year the first UHPC truss pedestrian bridge made only of this material was built and put in service in Alicante in July 2013.
Turning dreams into a reality
We were just testing hundreds of specimen at lab and making urban furniture in 2011. In 2013, we had a UHPC pedestrian bridge to be shown all over the world. That was a huge leap forward, proving that UHPC possibilities were real. Take a look at that pedestrian bridge. More detailed info can be found in here.
If there is something I have learnt for the last few years is that a design can only be considered good with a suitable manufacturing process, as it strongly determines not only its final quality but also its final cost. This is the point at which Fernando Galán (technical director at Prevalesa precasting company back then) came into play. The initial design proposed became a good one mostly thanks to him. He made the construction possible and fitted the structure budget to a competitive cost thanks to a suitable manufacturing process.
Competitiveness and efficiency
That experience showed us the possibilities of UHPC and a glimpse of what we could accomplish by working the four of us together. 13 February 2015 was the birthday of RDC. Our new adventure had just begun, hoping that we would have a long and successful way to go.
Even though we proved to be capable of (i) developing the suitable concrete for an optimum design; (ii) making it possible; and (iii) being competitive, we needed something we lacked of.
A place to build our products
We decided to open our own factory to produce precast UHPC products. After an intensive search, we found a perfect location at Vilamarxant, 30 km from Valencia, and the company PREFFOR (www.preffor.com) was set up in the summer of 2018. Since then, RDC team is independent to provide a full service to the clients, from an optimized design to the installation. This has proven to be a factor that improves the competitiveness of UHPC solutions. Nowadays, the company is producing precast elements for civil engineering, housing, aquaculture and the energy sector, with lengths up to 35 m and more than 500 m3 of UHPC produced per year.

Los comienzos de RDC
En nuestra sección de blog “Into our everyday life” vamos a compartir con vosotros nuestra evolución como empresa, nuestra actividad más reciente, quiénes somos, qué estamos haciendo, dónde, en qué proyectos estamos involucrados, etc. Como punto de partida para esta sección, creo que es importante comenzar que sepáis quiénes somos, nuestro origen. ¿Quieres conocer cómo fueron los comienzos de RDC? Al igual que cualquier historia, la historia de RDC puede variar ligeramente en función de quién la cuente. Este post describe esta historia de la forma en que yo mismo la viví; de la forma en la que conocí a las personas que hoy en día llamo socios (también amigos); de la forma en la que viví el nacimiento de RDC.
Todo comenzó en 2010. Por aquel entonces, y cuando me encontraba buscando tema para el proyecto final de carrera, conocí al Catedrático Pedro Serna de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) que lideraba la prometedora línea de investigación de UHPC. Tras un pequeña charla con él, me gustó su propuesta y decidí unirme a su equipo. Fue entonces cuando conocí a Esteban Camacho, un estudiante de doctorado. Aunque no lo sabía por aquel entonces, aquel fue el inicio de una gran aventura que dura hasta hoy.
Esteban se especializó en diseños de mezclas de hormigones avanzados, en especial en dosificaciones de UHPC, mientras que yo me centré más en el diseño de estructuras con hormigones especiales con fibras. El trabajo en estas dos áreas nos permitió hacer posible algo muy importante:
El diseño óptimo de una mezcla para un óptimo diseño estructural
Este fue el principio que seguimos en 2011 cuando ganamos los concursos de “Aspectos tecnológicos en ingeniería civil y arquitectura” y de “Expresividad del hormigón y sus elementos” convocados por la Asociación Científico-Técnica del Hormigón Estructural (ACHE). No pasó mucho tiempo hasta que el UHPC se ganó la atención tanto de ingenieros como prefabricadores. Recuerdo el día en que Hugo Coll (por aquel entonces ingeniero consultor en ICOSA Ingeniería Civil y profesor asociado en la UPV) apareció en la puerta de nuestro despacho para decirnos: “Necesitamos diseñar un pasarela peatonal de UHPC. Puedo gestionar que se haga realidad.” Así fue como lo conocimos. Aunque no teníamos mucha en fe en que pudiera salir adelante comenzamos a trabajar en ello, y en unas pocas semanas presentamos un primer borrador de diseño. En el plazo de un año la primera pasarela peatonal en celosía fabricada íntegramente en UHPC del mundo se construyó y se puso en servicio en Alicante en Julio del año 2013.
Convirtiendo sueños en realidades
En 2011 nosotros nos dedicábamos a ensayar cientos de probetas en el laboratorio y a hacer mobiliario
urbano para concursos en nuestros ratos libres. En 2013, ya teníamos una pasarela peatonal de UHPC para enseñar en todo el mundo. Esto supuso un gran salto hacia adelante y demostramos que las posibilidades del UHPC eran reales. Echad un vistazo a la pasarela. Podéis encontrar más información en aquí.
Si hay algo que he aprendido en los últimos años es que ningún diseño puede ser considerado bueno sin un sistemas de fabricación adecuado, ya que éste va a determinar no sólo la calidad final sino también los costes finales. Este es el punto en el que Fernando Galán (por aquel entonces director técnico de Prevalesa) entró en escena. El diseño inicial propuesto se convirtió en un buen diseño gracias en gran parte a él. Él hizo posible la construcción de esta pasarela y ajustó su precio a un precio competitivo gracias a un proceso constructivo especialmente adaptado a las propiedades del UHPC.
Competitividad y eficiencia
La experiencia con esta pasarela nos mostró las posibilidades que podía ofrecer el UHPC y un atisbo inicial de lo que podríamos llegar a conseguir trabajando los cuatro juntos. El 13 de Febrero de 2015 nació RDC. Nuestra aventura juntos había comenzado con la esperanza de tener un largo y exitoso caminos por delante.
Sin embargo, aunque habíamos demostrado que eramos capaces de (i) desarrollar el hormigón adecuado para un óptimo diseño; (ii) hacer realidad una estructura diseñada en UHPC; y (iii) ser competitivos, había todavía algo que necesitábamos.
Un lugar para construir nuestros productos
Así, decidimos fundar nuestra propia empresa de prefabricados de UHPC. Tras una búsqueda exhaustiva, encontramos una zona idónea en Vilamarxant, a 30 km de Valencia, y fundamos la empresa PREFFOR (www.preffor.com). Era el verano de 2018. Desde entonces, el equipo de RDC es capaz de proporcionar un servicio integral a sus clientes, desde la optimización del diseño hasta la instalación de la estructura fabricada. Esta manera de enfocar los proyectos ha demostrado favorecer la competitividad de las soluciones con UHPC. Actualmente, la empresa produce elementos prefabricados para la ingeniería civil, edificación, acuicultura y el sector energético, con elementos de hasta 35 m de luz y un volumen fabricado anualmente que excede los 500 m3.
