In 2016, RDC launched to the market a patented solution of high-durability floating platforms made with advanced concretes. Up to the moment, there are already more than 3.000 m2 floated for shellfish farming at three different regions (Cantabric sea, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea). The market penetration of this product proves that it is an optimized, durable and very competitive solution.
Based on this, RDC is developing a technology transfer to other high potential Blue Growth sectors. The first and most evident is the harvest of solar photovoltaic energy in the floating platform. This activity is already being developed in lakes and areas protected from swell, but the high resiliency of the Formex® structure may allow its use in opened waters. This application could be very useful for small islands, where both surface and energy generation capacity are very limited. The platform and its high load carrying capacity allow to install on it a small desalinization and/or potabilization plant, which works using the renewable energy harvested. This use of the energy makes the Formex® solution even more attractive for small islands, as many of them require a costly periodic supply of potable water by vessel.
